Crossbows, Spears, Cannons, and Rifles - Mods
Posted by: aberneth on 02-07-2007 @ 21:46 - Source: aberneth
This News Item has been viewed 21,955 times
After countless request threads for crossbows, spears, and guns on the official forums, a massive mod combining all of these elements is in the development phase. This mod, by Aberneth, will include rifles, shotguns, and pistols in one file, crossbows and cannons in another, and spears in the last file.

Due to Bethesda's shortcomings in mod tools, there are no new animations. However, the creator has exploited the staff animations to their fullest potential. See for yourselves:

The sound effects are still a work in progress, and the gunshots heard in the trailer were post-rendered.

The current models are rough drafts. Currently, they serve as a testing tool for the concept, and will be refined later on.

The forum thread can be found here.

having guns in oblivion is cheep, no matter how you look at it. I guess that I can include two rifle .esps. one that does the current amount of damage, and one that does 1/4th.

most things are one shot kills because I had already drained alot of health. For example, when I shot the countess over and over, her health was only at 10. it took me 4 hits with the rifle to kill that anvil guard, and usually takes 3-4 with the crossbow to kill a guard, but I will take your suggestions into consideration.

And yeah, I'm a dork but I am proud of it because I don't look like a total idiot whenever I post something that includes nonsensical gibberish and words so mis-spelled only those with IQ's lower than 75 can read them. Rules don't allow names but I think you can tell. People, if you know how to write like a civilized person, please do so. Writing unintelligible phrases, words, and sentences that people find hard to comprehend only serves to give a bad name to people like us, people who post things on forums, go to chat rooms, and socialize on the Internet. People won't want to use the Internet if it looks inhabited by people who didn't finish third grade. Please, try to improve postings to make sense. It makes them a lot easier to understand for everyone, including yourselves. smile

Modern weapons such as firearms changed the face of warfare into a totally different form. The medieval knight was rendered absolutely useless by the development of the firearm, because it went through his armor like it was butter. Later armorers corrected this problem with high-carbon steel armor, but it was brittle and broke easily under repeated hits from anything, and was soon rendered useless even for one shot by advancements in firearms such as longer barrels and the flintlock firing mechanism. Also, gunpowder became better refined and manufactured and therefore more powerful due to less impurities restricting combustion. However, by this time, the knight was a thing of the past, Colombus had landed, and trade was flourishing around the world. But, the knight would not have ceased to exist if the firearm had not been invented, therefore providing a cheap, easily used way to kill a knight who had trained all his life by a idiot peasant conscripted into service. So please, the firearms need to be way more powerful, because modern weaponry like the one in the video shown would easily destroy medieval armor like shown in the video even quicker than firearms of the times because modern firearms have copper-jacketed rounds, rifling, more powerful gunpowder, and bigger cartridges than archaic weapons. Even modern American infantry body armor can take a few hits hits from modern weaponry before it is useless. So please aberneth, the weapons need to be way more powerful and incredibly destructive if you are interested in maintaining any sort of realistic touch to the game. Besides, other people who made mods with even slightly more modern technology than in Oblivion made them way more powerful than Oblivion weaponry because it simply was that much better in reality.

SpardaSon21 I understand where you're coming from with the power of rifles...but if anyone has played oblivion they will know this - guards are some of the most powerful foes in the game. Making a 1 shot killing cannon to destroy a guard may inevitably lead to higher end daedra and dremora being slayed with 1 shot aswell, and what about umbra? If guns were made more poweful the game itself would lack meaning. Aberneth a little suggestion: if you're making very powerful guns then stash them in a cave and let us gamers find them, you can put cheap OKish guns in stores which kill in 15 shots like a sword would do. But if you want a double barreled shotgun that kills in 1 shot then make it challenging for us to get it! Otherwise the game would be ruined by noobs who can run around owning level 30 daedra with a gun (using term noob as an expression not meant to harm anyone)
I understand where you're coming from SpardSon21, and lads he is right, but the flavour of the game is about beating high level creatures with a delicious looking sword and the fights lasting for some time, not 1 second.
Great mod anyway, a sniper rifle would be fantastic but I may be pushing you a bit too far with that one - maybe grenades but in the form of a spell so you can chuck them, they land, BOOM!
10/10 for this mods creativity, but making guns in a game like this, demands a lot of thinking, aberneth, i believe you are up to the task! Good arguement Sparda.

You should try to make your own custom spell effect for a a mussle flash, such as a very small explosion at the barrel and maybe very fast shrapnel coming out for the shotgun. You should also make a knockdown effect, which i think is included in the CS since you can knock people down with spells included with the game when your destruction skill is high enough. The bodies in the video just kinda slumped to the ground after being shot, and that isnt normal especially from a shotgun.

Someone needs a new video cardbig grin

ok drainedsoul even in midevil times they had firearms, they however did not shoot as fast as the ones in this mod but they did still kill just the same and my opinion should b that it takes alot long to relaod just like it would have in reality beacause that would also even out the power a bit, it would make it so that if there were multipul hilvl foes that you couldnt just blast them all away i dont know if that would be possible but that would be very interesting.

i think we are all getting waaay too carried away, remember this, all of these weapons are designed after the motion and actions of the staff. You cant expect to have a bolt action magazine fed assault rifle in this game because there is no such thing to base it upon. The weapons are all very good as they are only made by using the staff's animations so we should congratulate aberneth for that.
But we need to see and play the mod to decide if any other versions would be worthwhile making.

You have done a great job on this have to say that but one thing still remains for me having fun with an extended version of the game aka set the timeline +10 years so everything would look advanced this would make it alot more realistic
and sorry i have to say this guys but guns in oblivion is still a big no for me since the armor in the game would be completely useless since a shotgun shoots in one or two blast through a decent grade kevlar vest (and yes u have different grades in kevlar and yes i know about what i'm speaking since weapons interest me alot from the good old dai katana to the newest barret l82a1 (the best sniperrifle the USA currently has)

I mention in the forum thread that those are placeholders until I can get good textures and meshes implemented. I have a highly detailed crossbow in the makings (infact, I am going to gametest it in 3 or 4 minutes) and 3 high detail guns in the making.

I personaly think instead of 1940s style rifles and shotguns there should be 18th century muskets . . . high power-slow reload = balance . . . dosent it?

Well I do like this mod but I do hope the models get better and you find some way to get custom animations and good luck with that.
I just hope they release the mod tools soon or they might end up like Deus Ex but IW really did suck.

And Bladez616 "bolt action magazine fed assault rifle" hahaha bolt action and assault rifle in the same sentence that's comical.

That's a shotgun, what about a CHA-CHING of a pump action? why is the char holding the crossbow like Mongo would?
I suppose you all put in alot of work but I realy hope you intend to out a whole lot more, that was dissaponting.
sorry.
Maybe it's because I don't know about animation. Infact, I don't know anything about modding at all.

By the Gods! Fear the evil sticks of thunder which have spawned forth from this mod! Our mages and armor clad knights mean nothing no more! *Looks around like the one eyed crazy laughing man from scene 7...or was it 14?...*

Good mod though for a few laughs...Unless you made the guns able to explode on themselves half the time, or backfire (that'd be HILARIOUS) and be incredibly innacurate I probobly wouldn't use a powerful weapon like that for serious gameplay...

Good mod though, good mod.

@tuxu: New animations for rifles are 100% impractical, since it would change STAFF animation as well.

I have a suggestion. Do what you said you were going to do with the mod and seperating certain files. But I think you should make 2 versions, 1 version contains weaker weapons and the other contains realistically powerful weapons like Sparda said. That way we can have a balanced version and a relistic and fun version. I agree with the bodies needing to fly farther, and the cannon sounds awsome. Keep up the good work.

You know you could use the stealth bow shot for the crossbow animation. Its already there for you including the horizontal view and string pull with sound. You would just have to change the arrow model to a bolt and make some sound adjustments. Should be easier than the rifling part, although that looks really good with what you had to work with.
