Elder Scrolls Files - Modder Interview #2 - Aberneth - Interview

Hello Aberneth nice of you to join us!

Hey! It's great to be here. Call me Nathan if you'd prefer

So, could you please tell us a little about Unique Landscapes?

Well, at the end of May in 2006, an ambitious and talented modder named Addiktive was tired of the boring monotonous landscapes from Vanilla Oblivion. He began working on a project that at the time was called 'Unique Forests'. Very soon it became one of the most popular mods out there. Sometime later, the modders started working on some landscapes that weren't quite forests, so the title was switched to 'Unique Landscapes'. The main focus of the UL series is to beautify and diversify all of Cyrodiil in a highly modular and compatible package. After 7 hit releases with over 100000 downloads apiece, Addikitive decided to move on to larger things, mainly Legend. About at the same time I came along. That is what we refer to as 'bad times'. There was a lot of argument and such. But things got better as time went by. By November, things had fallen into place and things were going smoothly.

Interesting, what gave you the idea to make a mod such as this?

Well, its not really 'my mod'. It is a compilation of the work of 6 talented modders, Addiktive, Aelius, Phitt, Rancen, Carel de Winter, and Me. I got into it after I finished with my house mod Bayview Villa. It modified a small stretch of beach in topal bay, and turned it into a flat sandy area. I liked that area alot, so I decided that I wanted to give landscaping a chance. I talked to my then co-administrator for a long since dead forum, who had somehow decided to start modding for the UL series. He reffered me to Yzerman, the current project organizer/secretary. And that is when I got into the UL series.

What work have you released so far?

I personaly have released 2 house mods, Bayview Villa and Silver Rose Estate. Along with that, my most recent and most popular release is Unique Landscapes Beaches of Cyrodiil: The Lost Coast. On christmas day, I released my newest mod, Unique Landscapes Fallenleaf Everglade.

The Unique Landscapes series, however, has released a total of 9 as of christmas. You can see them all here.

How many Unique Landscape mods do you intend to make?

That, for the most part, is undecided. Right now, I have two that I promised to make. Those are the other components in the Beaches of Cyrodiil Mini-series. They are 'Beaches of Cyrodiil: The Cliffs of Anvil' and 'Beaches of Cyrodiil: Topal Shoreside'. My newly acquired job here at The Elder Scrolls files may stop me from making more, depending on how much time it consumes. However, only time will tell.

Is it hard making a mod of this type?

At first, it is very difficult. Especially when you have very high standards to meet. When I started, my work was mediocre at best. I wont bother digging up the first screenshots from The Lost Coast. However, as time went by, I got used to it. I learned to improvise and make things more natural looking. By the time I released The Lost Coast, things were looking good. It was almost automatic for me to sit down and mod. I was able to almost go on autopilot when I was doing the same thing over and over.

How did you get into modding?

As I mentioned above, I used to run an oblivion forum which is long since dead. I wanted to make a nice hideout for the members that Oblivionate on the computer. So I started making the Silver Rose Estate. It was difficult and slow at first. I was utterly confused and I made a bunch of help topics on the official forums, but I eventually got into it.

Can you give any pointers to others who would like to get into modding?

Yeah. Download the Elder Scrolls Construction set first wink. You would be surprised at the number of people who skip that step. Just do it. Start modding. Don't give up because of negative feedback. You would be surprised at how many people criticize mods for fun. It WILL be difficult when you start. Just keep going.

So, thanks for the interview. I hope the next UL is as successful as the rest have been.

Thanks. We have high hopes for it too. Judging by the response it probably will be. Thanks for the interview Bloodreaver.
