Here it is the 34th version of the Weekly Gamefront Network News Update, the news part of the update covers the news side of the Network and the Gamefront Main site over the past week. There has been a fair bit of news from the Main site including a lot of trailers, reviews, previews and a lot more - some of this has been included below including lots of trailers and videos from the main gamefront site over the past week as well as more news from the network sites. Also of course there is the news from the Network Sites not as much as the main site but still just as important! Lots more news can be found from Gamefront News - Here

Gamefront News: A Whole Bunch of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine Trailers: Part 1

After speaking with Ulf Andersson, lead director for PayDay: The Heist, at Comic-Con 2011, I can officially say I’m extremely excited for this game that is basically all the best scenes from movies like Point Break, Heat and other classic heist films. The guys even have creepy clown masks so you can recreate the opening scene from The Dark Knight if you’re so inclined. Which I am.
For a little background, the game is a four-player co-op hostage-taking bank-robbing extravaganza of awesome. Think Left 4 Dead, but with theft and SWAT teams.
In a speech at Gamescom, Activision COO Eric Hirshberg decried the war of words going on between Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3, saying we all should just get along and be happy when anybody does great work.
There’s one other thing that this intensely competitive landscape has brought into our industry. And that, unfortunately, is an awful lot of mudslinging. Competition is of course a good thing. It keeps us all on our toes and ultimately, it makes the games better. Competition is healthy for this, or any other industry. But it’s one thing to want your game to be successful. It’s another to actively want the games of others to fail.
Seems to me we should all support great content, even if we didn’t create it… This isn’t politics. In order for us to win, someone else doesn’t have to lose.
A lot of good, positive thoughts there, I think, but he’s missing the point. The reason for all this mudslinging is that Battlefield 3 will be great and Modern Warfare 3 will suck. It’s science.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that Age of Empires was a competitive, hugely popular RTS series, able to compete with if not quite displace Starcraft’s international hegemony. But whether you blame the long wait for Age of Empires III, or that game’s tepid reception among critics and fans, the reality remains: the brand is tarnished, unlikely to reach such lofty heights again.
Rather than chase a pale shadow of their pre-millenial success, Microsoft Game Studios is relaunching the franchise today as Age of Empires Online, a “freemium” title sporting a sweeping visual redesign and a wealth of new gameplay features. Tired of trying to resurrect yesterday’s trends, the publishers have instead made a big bet on today’s, embracing a suite of popular features with obvious roots in other, established franchises.
Age of Empires Online is still ostensibly an RTS, though you’d be forgiven some confusion upon firing the game up. In keeping with the zeitgeist, the game’s new guise incorporates a giant swathe of MMORPG features meant to undergird its subtitle. Instead of simple, match-based gameplay, the world of AOEO revolves around a persistent hub city, which can be leveled up like an RPG character. The RTS gameplay is confined to various mission-style “quests,” which are intended to teach game skills and reward players with experience.
The title was developed first by Robot Entertainment and then by Gas Powered Games, two studios with extensive RTS experience, thanks to Halo Wars and Supreme Commander, respectively. This pedigree is immediately apparent upon firing up a quest — the game’s RTS engine is immaculate. Age of Empires purists will bemoan the move towards a more cartoonish style, but the units, animations, buildings and scenery all look great. Sharp rendering, pleasant colors, and amusing details are the order of the day — look for the tiny starfish glomming on to seaside rocks. It’s not easy to be so stylized without stumbling into “cute” territory, but the two developers pull off this balancing act with aplomb.
Only a couple of days ago, PC gamers were excited to learn that Modern Warfare 3 would have dedicated servers in the PC. Unfortunately, we now have some not-so-good news to pass on: Battlefield 3′s PC version won’t include an in-game server browser.
BF3 Blog found a message on Twitter that basically confirms this functionality. Apparently, each time you want to join a server, you’ll need to exit the game, browse through Battlelog (screens of the service can be found here, and then launch the game through there. According to the Twitter message linked above, the game “starts up REAL fast.”
Here’s how it will (apparently) work:
Open Origin and run BF3
A web browser will open Battlelog
Pick a server, and BF3 will open up and load that server
As any one of my colleagues here will attest, I am a huge fan of the Battlefield series, and I am very much looking forward to BF3. Still, every time we learn something else about the PC version of BF3, I find myself scratching my head in confusion. It’s almost like someone at DICE made a list of things that PC gamers would want, and then set out to eliminate those from the game. Server Browser? Gone from PC, but still on the console versions. Steam version? Nope. Standalone retail version? Nah. It’s baffling. At least we got dedicated servers, even if we can’t host our own.
Remember back in June when we talked with Robert Bowling of Infinity Ward at E3? He told us that Modern Warfare 3 was “Looking to support dedicated servers,” for PC. Remember when we told you how vital dedicated servers are to the lifespan of a game? As it turns out, someone at Activision was listening.
Eurogamer has a quote from Noah Heller of Beachhead Studios that is going to make a lot of PC gamers very happy. Here’s what he said:
The big announcement today is that we’re supporting dedicated servers for PC, which is really cool. And of course we’re working really hard right now on the customized version of Elite for the PC, because it’s an open platform and has some challenges.
Honestly, this isn’t a surprise. With the marketing and publicity push EA has behind Battlefield 3, Activision couldn’t afford to alienate PC gamers this time around.
No, it’s not some form of massive editor — it’s a utility that allows you to extract, view, and edit files with the .big extension. This tool is not only useful for modders of both Command & Conquer: Generals and Zero Hour, but even for other games that use .big files, such as Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle Earth.
Included is a W3D Viewer to view 3d models, and INI Editor to add some useful options for modifying .ini files, and functionality with external editors.
This week’s comment comes in response to Jim Sterling’s editorial about the new voice acting in the Silent Hill HD Collection. Nothing I do can prepare you for the madness of the comment, so I’ll just let it fly.
The Silent Hill franchise is like a night of sex. The first few times are amazing and feel fantastic, after that it gets a little painful until the last couple of tries where you’re ploughing away like a trooper, trying to find that little bit ecstasy through the agony and the blood.
I shudder to think what “CrawFail” could have gone through that would make that metaphor take such a twist.ns.

I’d like to personally congratulate Konami on completing a goal it seemingly set out to accomplish several years ago. It has finally shat on the last clean piece of the Silent Hill legacy with its Silent Hill HD Collection. Truly, this is a marvel to behold, and proof that when Konami sets out to f**k something up, it makes sure to do a good job!
Personally, I thought it was almost impossible to ruin Silent Hill 2, which happens to be my favorite game of all time, but I was very wrong. Impressively, Konami has been able to take the best survival horror game ever made and render it almost unbearable to play thanks to the new voice actors found in the HD Collection. These are the kind of actors you’d find voicing PlayStation One games. Yes, I know we all thought they’d died out in the great “bad Voice Actor Fire of 2002,” but it seems Konami kept these amazing talents a secret, just for this very special occasion.
It’s not like the original Silent Hill 2 voice actors were good, but that’s where I truly give Konami the credit for its effort — the fact it was able to find voice actors even worse in order to ensure that nobody would like the HD remaster is absolutely astounding, and worthy of a standing ovation. The sheer commitment it must have taken to find a voice actor for Eddie as f**king shitty as the new guy leaves me at a loss for words. I can’t help but admire the herculean task that the publisher has undertaken this day. As for Maria, who happened to be very competently voiced in Silent Hill 2, I’m awestruck at how they took that one positive element and transformed the character into an overly slutty, unsubtle parody rather than the insidious, more intriguing character that she was. Truly a masterwork in the ruination of a classic!

Up until its first expansion, Fight for the Light, DC Universe Online has been pretty Earth-centric. Exploring the rest of the, well, DC Universe is part of the reason why Sony Online Entertainment decided to focus on Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern for its first expansion of the game.
Creative Director Jens Andersen explains a little better than I could here (with videos!) in the trailer below. But basically — they wanted the ass-kicking power of Light in the hands of players. Can’t argue with that.
The hostages are saved, with little blood spilled, although the leader of the terrorists that attacked the Sarif factory has escaped the SWAT forces attempting to capture him. It could have gone badly, but it didn’t — and despite being a bit annoyed with him, the Detroit Police Department cops on-hand to deal with the crisis are congratulating Adam Jensen on a job well done.
It’s about three hours into Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and it’s time for a little detective work.
With this latest preview of DXHR from Eidos Montreal, we’ve now seen a grand total of about 12 hours of the game. That’s including the opening chunks and the first major mission, which I previewed back in Irvine, Calif., some months ago (a full run-down of which you can read right here and right here). Since we’ve already dealt with freeing hostages from a bomb-rigged room, avoiding getting shot by a ton of anti-augmentation Purists and talking a terrorist out of shooting a civilian, we’re heading back to Sarif headquarters in Detroit to figure out the next move.
Trine 2 is coming, and it’s bringing with it co-op! This time around you’ll be able to come on this side-scrolling adventure with up to two of your friends either on- or offline, which is great if you have a girlfriend and lame if you don’t, like me — who am I supposed to play this with?

Hey, guess what? Crytek has made the CryEngine 3 SDK available for everyone free of charge, which is crazy great. So you should totally get it, because you can make the most attractive indie games every with it. Or you can just f–k around with it, which is what I’m gonna do. No matter what you plan to do with it, though, you need to actually download the thing first, right? Ge it here.
I seriously hate the connectedness of today’s world; I’m almost a shut-in, and I hate people. And so I love single-player games. That’s my s–t right there. But there’s somebody out there who thinks my s–t is going away.
“I believe the traditional single-player game experience will be gone in three years. Right now you sit in your living room and you’re playing a game by yourself – we call it the sp mission or the single-player campaign. In a world with Facebook I just don’t think that’s going to last,” said games consultant Mark Cerny at a secret Sony panel attended by Eurogamer.
So, yeah, the fact that Facebook exists will alters games that in no way involve Facebook. OK, good talk. Oh, wait, he’s not done.
“We’re already seeing the wall starting to crumble a bit,” he said. “Demon’s Souls, even though on one level it’s a single-player game, as you’re walking through the world you’re seeing the ghosts of everybody who died in that world via the internet. You can leave messages for them. They can leave messages for you. There’s actually a boss you fight in that game which is controlled by another player.
Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello doesn’t seem to care about being nice to the competition. He’s got harsh words for Activision and the Call of Duty series, in the form of “my dad can beat up your dad” rhetoric. And oh, is it sweet.
During Gamescom, Eric Hirshberg of Activision mentioned that EA’s incendiary comments about competition are hurting the industry, according to IndustryGamers, to which Riccitiello had this to say to Hirshberg:
Welcome to the big leagues Eric — I know you’re new in the job but someone should have told you this is an competitive industry.
You’ve got every reason to be nervous. Last year Activision had a 90 share in the shooter category. This year, Battlefield 3 is going to take you down to 60 or 70. At that rate, you’ll be out of the category in 2-3 years. If you don’t believe me, go to the store and try to buy a copy of Guitar Hero or Tony Hawk.
Remember that free Portal 2 DLC we’ve been expecting to hit this summer because that’s when Valve said it would hit? Well, Doug Lombardi tells Kotaku that DLC will be coming, finally, in mid-September. “That’s still technically summer,” he says. That’s true, Doug, but only if you get it out by September 21. Then it’s not summer anymore. So y’all better hurry.
In games of strategy, there’s always the struggle of visualization. You might think you have the perfect tactics for a given situation, but you never know, especially in Strategy genre video games. Will my marines engage those zerglings at a distance, or will the gap get closed any my forces shredded? Will the enemy continue as I expect or route left and take the flank? And most importantly, Can I win this battle?
In most strategy games, you never know. Part of the skill is in the imagination — seeing what your opponent will do and seeing how your forces will react. In Frozen Synapse, though, you have all the information the next five seconds can provide, because you can simulate (almost) every possibility.
Frozen Synapse is a turn-based strategy game from indie developer Mode 7 Games, and your role in each of its simulated, computer AI-type battles is to issue orders to your forces. The game is turn-based in that after every set of orders is issued, they’re executed for five seconds, and then everything stops and you have the opportunity to issue orders again. Both sets of forces — you and your opponent get all the time in the world to tell your troops what to do, but once you hit the button to commit to your plan, both get executed simultaneously, and just about anything can happen.
Finally another gameplay trailer to go along with the Battlefield 3 and Mass Effect 3 ones. And while this is no BF3 Caspian Sea, I think this Armored Core V trailer is better than that Mass Effect 3 thing. Really, I think this looks rather awesome. To think a Japanese developer has two upcoming games I’m looking forward to. (From Software has this and Dark Souls.) Just kidding, I want to play every Japanese game! But, yeah, you should watch this trailer.
You gotta hand it to the marketing people when they can put together what feels like a very cinematic trailer from what its undoubtedly actual gameplay footage. Usually, trailers are either cinematic or gameplay, but this one for Assassin’s Creed Revelations managed to be both gameplay and cinematic, and a good on at that. Props, y’all, on a solid trailer.
It should be noted that this trailer apparently shows Altair at several points. Just FYI and thank god.
So, Far Cry 3. You are pretty. We’re still waiting to see if you’re more pretty than your predecessor, but we believe you’ll be able to pull it off, at least on PC. These six new screenshots look to be of particularly high quality, anyway, and so we have faith. Take a look.
Gamescom is a European convention, ad so naturally we get a new FIFA 12 trailer out of it. Nothing particularly new here, but it does get you pumped for some awesome football action that this game is likely bringing thanks to the new Player Impact engine. Yes, I’m buying into the hype; wanna fight about it? Let’s just all enjoy this new trailer together, shall we?
With Goldeneye 007 Reloaded, Activision isn’t just giving us an HD version of that one James Bond game we love so much along with some online multiplayer; nope, as an added bonus we get the MI6 Ops mode, which includes a series of standalone single-player missions. Being that it’s called “ops” you’d think it was co-op, but apparently not. Still, I guess it’s cool. Activision thinks it’s cool enough to advertise it, anyway. Speaking of advertising, I have some for you:
A good trailer makes you feel good about the prospect of playing a game, and this new Ratchet and Clank: All 4 One trailer certainly accomplishes that. I’m going to chalk much of its success up to the choice of accompanying song, which I had never heard before. If anybody knows what it is, please tell me, because I like it. Here’s the trailer:
With PAX Prime 2011 a little over a week away, many gamers are gearing up to either attend the event or to watch live streams of the panels. But with over 150 panels, the PAX schedule is intimidating — that’s why we put together this infographic of the top 30ish panels to keep an eye on.
GameStop is working with recently acquired Spawn Labs to stream games from the cloud a la OnLive, but apparently it’s not going to stop at PC.
“Spawn recently began its first beta and is currently live, testing the streaming of Xbox 360, PS3 and PC games from a data centre in Austin, Texas,” confirmed GameStop president Tony Bartel. “We continue to get positive feedback from our publishing partners about the pro-console, low-investment model that we have chosen.”
What, no Wii games? What’s the deal with that? Anyway, this is crazy, and I’m almost surprised Sony and Microsoft would agree to something like this, but those logistics must be taken care of and make sense for them if they’re moving forward.
A closed beta is expect later this year for GameStop’s streaming service followed by a national launch next year.
All right, y’all, it is totally on now. Gears of War 3 has gone gold, and so this is it — no more delays. The game is coming on September 20, and there’s nothing you can do to stop it anymore. To celebrate, the folks at Epic got an Xbox cake.
Tom Clancy’s novels have gotten extremely dumb over the last couple decades, but I’ve always granted Ghost Recon a slight intellectual edge over its competitors. This trailer confirms that faith, heralding a number of clever multiplayer features that look both fun and tactical.
The addition of suppressing fire that actually, y’know, suppresses people is just one example. It’s got all the elements you’d expect — the swelling music, Big Ben, the houses of Parliament. Sega and Nintendo stars taking the virtual stage inside a virtual stadium, taking place in the virtual opening ceremonies of 2012′s very real London Summer Games.
Try to spot all the character cameos and their various sports. Things start pretty normal — there’s Princess Peach doing synchronized swimming! Luigi tearing up the equestrian events! Knuckles dribbling past defenders on the soccer field! Then they get crazy and futuristic. I’m pretty sure relay races involving swinging from levitating laser bars aren’t on the London 2012 docket, but who knows — seems like practically anything can become an Olympic sport in this day and age
Voting on the face for the female Commander Shepard model for Mass Effect 3 has wrapped up, with a big portion of votes declaring the blonde, not-really-looking-like-she-could-handle-a-fight version of Shepard the winner. Now it’s time for the next step in the vote: hair color.
Hit this link to take part in the vote for FemShep’s hair color on Facebook, which includes four different versions. The redhead model is currently dominating the charts with 11,430 “Like” votes, followed by the black-haired model with 8,349 votes at the time of this writing. The blonde and brunette models are more or less tied bringing up the rear, with 3,511 and 3,667, respectively.
I still don’t really buy that this version of Shepard could do much in the way of Reaver ass-kicking, but what do I know, I guess. The masses are speaking. If you’d like to join the masses and speak, you best do so quickly and go cast a vote. Remember to “Like” the one you like..

As you might recall, in my original post about the new Wii console that loses the GameCube backwards compatibility I predicted that it would not be coming to America, and apparently I was right.
“Nintendo of America does not currently have any plans to release the Wii bundle that was announced by Nintendo of Europe on Aug. 17,” said a spokesperson to Destructoid. “Consumers in the United States can currently purchase a Wii console bundled with the Mario Kart Wii game and Wii Wheel accessory for a suggested retail price of $149.99. The Wii Party game is available separately for a suggested retail price of $39.99.”
I mean, how much cheaper than $149 could it possibly get? When the Wii U comes out, then we’ll talk.
So, lately, some EA games have disappeared from Steam on the day that they’ve released new paid DLC for those games. What’s up with that? Well, it’s likely because of the way Valve monitors DLC purchases for games on Steam. Or maybe it’s not just that.
“I don’t think Valve can pick just one thing and think the issue would go away if we fixed that,” Gabe Newell told Develop.
“Companies have to earn the right to install content on their customers’ PCs on a regular basis. The same thing is true of Steam. We have to prove we are creating value on an ongoing basis, whether it’s to EA or Ubisoft or whoever. We really want to show there’s a lot of value having EA titles on Steam. We want EA’s games on Steam and we have to show them that’s a smart thing to do.”
So clearly Gabe thinks it’s possible for EA and Steam to reconcile. The question, then, is if they do reconcile, will they do so before Battlefield 3 comes out? I think that’s all anybody cares about.
In any case, I really don’t think this is going to work out. I mean, EA wants people to use Origin, right? What better way to suck them in than to force them to use it?
Speaking with Gaming Lives, DiCE’s Karl Magnus Troedsson gives us some fresh deets on Battlefield 3‘s newly announced co-op mode. First, there’ll be no splitscreen co-op on consoles, so those looking for some couch action (of the non-sexual kind) are s–t out of luck. Not that we care, anyway, since we’ll be playing on PC. But anyway.
At launch, there will be six co-op levels available, and that wording I guess presumes that more will be made available as DLC. Troedsson says each level will take between 20 and 50 minutes to complete, meaning this mode is more than some simple diversion from the main campaign.
Battlefield 3 vs. Modern Warfare 3 is gearing up to be the year’s biggest gaming rivalry, but EA COO Peter Moore isn’t quite thinking about it that way. He thinks it’s a rivalry that will last for YEARS.
If you look at last year, you might argue that Call of Duty took maybe 90 percent of the market share. We think we can knock that down to 70 percent this year. We don’t have to outsell Call of Duty to have a very successful year. This is a long-term strategy to be a major player, if not ultimately a dominant player in this industry. But it starts this year.
Interesting. It makes one wonder what they’ve got int he pipeline for next year. Maybe something from a bunch of former Call of Duty Developers over at Respawn?
It’s already pretty clear that id Software intends the PC version of RAGE to be the canonical way to play the game, but it sounds like the company isn’t taking it easy on maximizing the hardware of consoles, either.
Creative Director Tim Willits told NowGamer at Gamescom 2011 that id has been working to get the most out of the Playstation 3′s hardware, specifically. RAGE is the first game using id’s new engine, idTech 5, and Willits said it keeps the Playstation 3 busy:
When you build an engine from the ground up, it makes the process of achieving these milestones much easier than using an old system and trying to fit it around old tech and methods. On the PS3 version, every CPU that isn’t being used, is doing something in the background, so Rage uses every core under the console’s hood.
Id’s John Carmack recently lamented the hardware limitations of consoles and the problem of texture pop-up, but Willits said that id’s work with optimizing for the PS3 has gone a long way toward eliminating the ugly problem: “The extra cores are assigned to work on textures in the background, as there’s tons of visual data on the Blu-Ray and on the hard drive,” he explained. “We load compressed JPG data, and assign those extra cores to work on these textures, and uncompress them in the background so there is no nasty pop up, or blurred textures.”
For a couple weeks id Software has been threatening to make RAGE HD (iOS) free if the game’s Facebook page reaches 100k “likes.”

Ever feel irritated that the only legal way to watch all the NFL games you want is to sign up for DirecTV? Boy, I sure do, and there’s no way in hell I’m signing a two-year agreement with any satellite company. I mean damn.
Anyway, Sony has announced that they’ve signed a deal with DirecTV to bring the greatest TV sports package on Earth, the NFL Sunday Ticket — which lets you watch any out-of-market NFL game — to the PlayStation 3 console starting this season. If you don’t have DirecTV, it’ll cost you the standard $339 for the full season, and if you do have DirecTV, you can get Sunday Ticket for $50, and apparently you can now use the PS3 as a DirecTV receiver, which makes one wonder why you would pay extra to watch it on your PS3. Either they’re not being clear or I’m getting confused or both.
Anyway, the point is that this is a pretty big deal. Between MLB.TV, NHL GameCenter and this, and ESPN3 on the Xbox 360, you almost don’t really need TV service or a computer to watch sports. Well, you still need the computer for your NBA plan, but otherwise you’re set. What a wonderful world we live in.
I am really looking forward to Saints Row: The Third, but wow the voice acting in this trailer is atrocious. Even when Killbane is interacting with other SR3 characters it sounds like he’s reading from a script. I checked, and that’s definitely not Mark Meer, so I assume it’s just another run of the mill bad video game voice actor.
Crummy voice acting aside, some interesting reveals in this video, including what looks like a Lucha Libre mini game. I wholeheartedly approve.
Sony has always held the home court advantage in the Japanese game market. Even though Microsoft has done well around the world, it’s never made major inroads in Japan. Unfortunately for them, it looks like that will continue to be the case.
EDGE is reporting that a number of Japanese retailers are now drastically reducing the amount of XBox 360 hardware they’re carrying. Geo, the largest specialty retailer is Japan, is one of those. They’re cutting back their XBox 360 business, as is Yamada Denki in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, which is pulling 360 hardware and software out of stores across Japan. They’re liquidating their remaining stock at heavy discounts. Smaller stores in Tokyo are joining in as well, with one offering up a Halo: Reach hardware bundle for ¥9,980 (approx. $130).
While it’s not a surprise that MS is struggling in Japan (heck, Move is outselling Kinect there), it is surprising to hear that retailers are throwing in the towel on the console. It begs the question: Will MS be able to convince Japanese retailers to buy into the next XBox console (rumored to be in line for a 2014 release), or will Sony get an even bigger lead than they already have?
The Sonic the Hedgehog series is wack. You know it. I know it. It’s nothing but running really fast into coins. It’s as if Sega, when looking for their own Mario-killer mascot, wrongly decided the best part of the Super Mario Bros. games is when mario gets star power.
That said, the song in the commercial is pretty awesome. And maybe giving Sonic the Spider-Man: Edge of Time treatment will be a good thing.
A lot of (dumb) folks like to chalk up the failure of the 3DS so far to make a real impact on the success of mobile gaming, and so those same (dumb) people think the PS Vita will probably also fail. Sony director of hardware marketing John Kollers has something to tell those people (from Gamespot):
We view that as two separate demographics, and we’ve done a lot of quantitative and qualitative research to back this up. When you look at the type of consumer that’s playing cell phone games currently, it’s someone that enjoys smaller “kill time” gaming and has not gravitated to the larger, richer, deeper experiences that true handheld gaming provides.
I totally agree, which means you’re completely right. But it would appear that Sony has been handing out Vita dev kits to indie mobile developers — does that mean you’re trying to attract both crowds with the Vita? I answered my own question, but go ahead anyway.
We’ve taken them [those deeper, richer experiences] to a new level on PS Vita with the entirety of new ways to play. That “new ways to play” idea, particularly for Vita, really differentiates from what’s available on mobile phones or tablets and, frankly, what will be available on those platforms over the next three to five years.You’re going to see PS Vita expand what a lot of people believe to be true about handheld gaming, and you’re going to see a lot of those current mobile phone and tablet gamers come over to Vita. We’re very convinced of that.
Players worried about the tendentiousness of BioWare’s forthcoming MMO will be heartened by Huttball, which is so silly that it borders on campy. Administered by the Hutt cartels, this bloodthirsty combat sport takes place on the neutral planet of Nar Shadda, meaning that it ignores faction rules — Republic teams will be paired up against other Republic teams.
You can see how the action goes down in the trailer below — it’s a variation on Capture the Flag, with lightsabers and plenty of deathtraps. Felicia Hardy is still around in 2099. Drugged up with anti-aging serum and cloned repeatedly in Spider-Man: Edge of Time, the Black Cat that Peter Parker knew in his own time isn’t the one he meets in the future, according to the voice of Black Cat, Katee Sackhoff.
If you’re cool at all, you’ll recognize Sackhoff from her role as Starbuck in the 2003 Sci-Fi Channel reboot of “Battlestar Galactica.” In the trailer below, she gives a little bit of insight into her character in Beenox’s upcoming Spider-Man title. We’ve also heard from Val Kilmer and Laura Vandervoort.
I really like the direction the Rise of Nightmares marketing is taking; they’re actually managing to put together some genuinely amusing trailers. (If you haven’t seen the Grandma video, watch it here.) Anyway, this trailer for everybody’s favorite upcoming Kinect horror game takes the stance that the game is “practically a romantic comedy,” which sounds pretty good to me. It’s a horror game and a romantic comedy game! That’s gotta be a first.

The next entry in Hothead Games’ Deathspank series, The Baconing has kind of slipped beneath my radar. Until this trailer, that is. Now I’m excited to check it out when it drops on Aug. 30 on Steam, Xbox Live and the Playstation Network.
Gamescom is here, and CD Project RED apparently thinks it’s a big enough deal to offer The Witcher 2 at a 40% discount this week at GOG. That’s right, right now you can download The Witcher 2 from GOG for a mere $29.99. Hmmm I haven’t played this ish yet, so I think I’m gonna have to do this. Damn you, sales, making me spend money on games I’m not going to be able to play immediately thanks to the bounty of new releases I have to get through. But, hey, at least it’ll be here when I do need it, right?
Little is known about Salem, a forthcoming F2P MMO from Swedish developers Seatribe. The early 17th century is an undeniably underused era for historical gameplay, though, so we’ll give them points for creativity.
The footage below suggests a game that is simultaneously cartoonish and scary. Players should expect to battle both witchcraft and potential menace from the local Native Americans. You might even have to do some collection quests to prepare a Thanksgiving meal. At this point, who can say?
At Gamescom, Ubisoft revealed their full lineup for the PS Vita, and it contains many a familiar name. Note that not all these are launch games; it’s just what Ubisoft is ready to tell us they’ll be bringing to the platform eventually. Anyway, Ubisoft is bringing Assassin’s Creed, Rayman, Lumines, Asphalt, Michael Jackson: The Experience and Dungeon Hunter to the PS Vita. Phew, that’s quite a list.
It’s good to see this kind of commitment to the handheld that most of us here are at GameFront are pretty pumped about; we’d like for there not to be a repeat of what the 3DS has been going through with ts utter lack of quality titles.

Dawn of War: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Demo Incoming!
Attention Honour Guard: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine Demo is headed to PC, Xbox 360 & PS3! The demo is planned to launch simultaneously for the Xbox 360 and Windows PC on August 23rd and then on PS3 on August 24th!
The Space Marine demo features two very different areas of the game. The first pits the player against an Ork horde outside the gates of a munitions factory. Armed with six devastating weapons, including the iconic bolter and lethal chainsword, the player will get to experience Space Marine’s seamless mix of melee and ranged combat first hand as they take on the rampaging invaders. The second area gives players a taste of the exhilarating Jump Pack sequences where the game’s hero—Captain Titus—takes to the skies to rain death from above.
The demo is planned to launch simultaneously for the Xbox 360®video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC on 23rd August and then on PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system on 24th August.
Players who have pre-ordered the digital PC version of Space Marine through Steam will receive an exclusive early access period starting on the 18th of August, running through the weekend. Alright, now before I get into the article I'm gonna go and warn you-this will take quite a while to read since it is a rather lengthy update. It's the longest I've ever written, coming in at over 3,000 words. Now I'm not gonna go toot my own horn and be like "look how awesome I am with all my groundbreaking stuff" because it's not groundbreaking, but just a lot of work new things, and redone things to show you guys.
So here we are now, at a crossroads for the mod. The mod's changing. Hopefully for the better.
Before I forget, I'd like to also mention that the mod has now over 200,000 views and more than 400 members watching/subscribed! Thanks for all your support thus far.
Well you probably figured something was up with all these cryptic messages, and apparently a few of you were scared that something terrible had befell the mod. Well, nothing bad has happened. Only good stuff here folks. And this news article covers that goodness.
Legacy Era: Reconstruction
If you couldn’t tell, the theme of this article is “reconstruction.” Old things are getting changed or rearranged, including things that have stayed the same for a looooong time. Such things include the unit list/tech system, starbases, and economy. I’ll also be showing a closer look into a new gametype for space skirmish called “Survival”, something that’s been floating around the community on empireatwar.filefront.com and EverythingEAW.com a bit since 2011 began. So there are multiple topics getting addressed here, and so this requires a little index to keep things nice and tidy. They are as follows:
-Overhaul of unit list and tech system
-Changing of the starbases
-Revamp of economic structures and income ships
-A look into the Survival gametype
-Other new materiel
And so now we get to the first topic on the list, an overhaul of the unit list and tech system. Now, this is nothing groundbreaking, but something that’s been on its way for a long time. Units are now divided into two overarching categories: “pre-Legacy” and “true Legacy” era ships. “Pre-Legacy” era ships are those which formerly comprised the first 2 tech levels. They are vessels from the Galactic Civil, New Republic Era, and basically anything from before the Legacy Era comics. This includes Republic-, Defender-, and Imperial I/II-class Star Destroyers, MC80 Liberty and Home One cruisers, and other ships from the same time periods.
The “pre-Legacy” era ships now form what will be formally known as the Reverse forces of each faction. Such units no longer can be built from your standard starbase, but instead from a separate facility known as an Old Tech Construction Dock. The revised unit list is as follows:
So, how does this work exactly? Well, in order to gain access to the Reserves for any faction, you must first construct an Old Tech Construction Dock. You can build one at any starbase level in skirmish and on at any planet in galactic conquest (but you can only build the capital ships at capital ship-producing worlds). Afterwards, you are free to build what you’d like.
Now, you may be asking why I would do this and think that it was fine the way it was. Well, honestly I didn’t like it having all these ships not truly from the Legacy Era being used more than the right ones, so this basically forces you to build the more modern designs. To additionally enforce this “rule,” there will be a limit implemented for all the “old” ships, allowing approximately a maximum of 10 per each design to be built (the larger the ship, the less you can build of it). These ships should not form the bulk of your forces. If you don’t like it, you can easily change it once the mod is released, but support will not be given to anyone for post-release modification of code. The ultimate purpose is to gradually shift the mod into the phase where all these outdated ships are replaced and no longer available, but only if models for more modern designs are created.
Also, expect file validations to resume on Friday. I have 10 files to do, and I will be doing 2 each day. While the bugs are still present, they are workaround-able (is that even a word, lol?).
The pictures are now working, and I will give you instructions as to how to view new files on the site. I just wish that all the bugs could have been eradicated before I decided to resume validations.
The 2 files a day policy will most likely apply each morning, starting on Friday 5th August, UK time. So expect 2 files to be up each day just after 10am (GMT) until I have gone through the whole list.
I want to thank each and every one of the "old gang" of members for sticking around, for not spamming the heck out of comments for various files and POTDs, and for not repeatedly contacting me asking when their files will be viewable even after all the news that has been posted, asking for people to put a hold on their files until everything is ready. You know who you are.

The August/September JKFiles Mapping Contest Starts Today!
Hey guys, apologies again for the delay! Like I said in the recent announcement I had hoped to get this started in July, as obviously some people will be going back to school in September, but alas due to be being busy with a few other things that didn’t work out, so sorry for that!
Anyway, now it is time for the details, the rules and other such things! Please read the information below carefully, as it is very important.
The map must be created by the entrant. You may only submit your own work!
You must follow the JKFiles submission guidelines as normal.
Please do not use models or textures ported from other games.
Your map MUST be a Small/Medium sized FFA map, for obvious time and practicality reasons.
Your map can be for either Jedi Academy or Jedi Outcast.
You MUST include [CONTEST] before your maps name in the name section when submitting your entry, to avoid confusion and possible accidental disqualification, since we may upload your map thinking it is a normal submission.
Please be sure to tell us in the file description section what skill category you are entering in. It is up to you to decide which category you want your map to be entered in; Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced (details for these categories can be found below). If you do not tell us which category you are entering in, we will choose a category for you based on your apparent mapping skill, so don’t forget to make sure you tell us!
Please be aware however (as in previous contests) if there are not enough entries to use the 'skill category' method, all submissions will be grouped together, and the staff will pick the three best maps to be voted on!
The theme for this contest is The Planets of Our Solar System. That said, you are not limited to just the main 9 planets (8 if you listen to scientists and consider Pluto a 'dwarf' pfft...) you are free to use other bodies in our Solar System as locations, such as dwarf planets/Kuiper Belt objects such as Eris and Sedna, asteroids, moons of any of the planets or even space stations orbiting the said planets (or the sun) should you so wish!
If you need any info or inspiration, Google or Wikipedia are excellent sources of photographs from space probes and landers as well as lists of bodies in our Solar System and information on them!
