Gamefront News: Box Art and More Deets and Screens for Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception

This morning Entertainment Weekly gave us the first official word on Uncharted 3. It was exciting. But they didn’t tell us or show us everything there is to say and see today in regards to the game. Naughty Dog’s Arne Meyer took to the Playstation Blog to show us a couple extra screens (the same scene from different angles, basically) and to provide us with a few extra details on what’s in store. Strap in, because this will be a beefier-than-usual post.

First, we have a nice, clean plot synopsis:

In his search for the fabled “Atlantis of the Sands,” Nathan Drake and longtime friend and mentor Victor Sullivan set off on a daring trek into the heart of the Arabian Desert. But when terrible secrets of this lost city are uncovered, their journey becomes a desperate bid for survival that will force Drake to confront his deepest fears.

Gamefront News: Coolest Gaming Protagonists of 2010

A game lives and dies by its protagonist. If you’re going to stare at a man’s butt for 20 hours, you should have some affinity for him, whether it derives from his insouciant attitude, his razor-sharp wit, or the hopeless circumstances he’s found himself mired in. The first-person offerings were generally underwhelming when it comes to character (with the possible exception of Sam Worthington’s pixelated-scenery-chewing performance in Call of Duty: Black Ops), so there’s been a lot of third-person butt-staring going on. Below, we’ve compiled the opinions of various staff members, on whom they think is the coolest protagonist of 2010, and why.

* Vito Scaletta – Mafia II
* John Marston – Red Dead Redemption
* Sam Gideon – Vanquish
* Commander Shepard – Mass Effect 2
* Sam Fisher – Splinter Cell: Conviction

Gamefront News: Dead Space 2 Demo Coming December 21

Dead Space 2 was one of our favorite games of E3, so we can’t imagine a better Christmas present than a chance to play the Dead Space 2 demo. Thankfully, EA has announced today that their Christmas gift is exactly that.

According to the press release EA sent out today, the demo will take players to the Church of Unitology. Here’s the quote:

In the Dead Space 2 demo, players will take engineer Isaac Clarke on a terrifying adventure through the Church of Unitology, an expectedly “safe” place that quickly becomes dangerous and deadly, during the Necromorph outbreak on the Sprawl. Players will also have access to a variety of new tools that Isaac can use to fight Necromorphs, including the new Javelin gun, updated stasis recharge mechanic and enhanced telekinesis ability. Players will also experience the advanced suit, equipped with jets that will allow Isaac full 360 degree control in Zero-G space.

The Dead Space 2 demo will be released on December 21 on XBox Live worldwide and PlayStation Network in North America. It will hit PSN in Europe the day after.

Gamefront News: Final Fantasy XIV Free Till It’s Fixed for Subscribers

Final Fantasy XIV has had probably the worst launch of any MMORPG I can recall.

From the critical lambasting it took among my peers and I, to the overall negative impression it has left with gamers, it seems nothing has gone right for the title. Effective immediately those who own and play Final Fantasy XIV are getting their free play time extended indefinitely.

Square-Enix has admitted this several times but extending the introductory time period twice now. Today though the company demonstrated a huge amount of humility and publicly reaffirmed its commitment to righting that sinking ship. In a post on the Official Final Fantasy XIV website, Yoichi Wada, President and CEO of Square-Enix outlined some big changes and the company’s intent to effectively remake and restructure the game, including a delay of the PS3 console version.

Gamefront News: GameFront 2010: Best Action Games

This year was a bit lackluster in the area of first-person shooters, which often seem to dominate the conversation when you start talking about a year’s big games. Instead, 2010 was something of a banner year for action games, which saw big releases in a number of marquis franchises that actually surpassed their predecessors and gave you the kind of experience that feels like it’s worth $60+. We got action games with stories and protagonists and multiplayer modes actually worth turning off Call of Duty to play — who knew. Below, we’ve built a list of our picks for the year’s best action titles and what made them stand above the crowd.

* Red Dead Redemption
* Alan Wake
* Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.
* Vanquish

Gamefront News: GameFront 2010: Longest Haul Games of 2010

Taking a page from the best and worst without being too harsh, some games just don’t know when to fade away. Our staff lives games, so while some titles might just drive the average gamer batty, there are some titles that we see so often we’re more than a little tired of hearing about them.

This list covers just those sorts of games. Those that outstayed their welcome, be they an unneeded sequel or a game that just plain showed up to the gaming party and never decided to leave. Now games that stay around too long don’t necessarily have to be bad, they’re just overexposed or generally played out titles. Below are some game titles our writers feel meet these criteria and why they feel that way.

* Call of Duty
* Final Fantasy XIII
* Red Dead Redemption
* Bioshock 2
* Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

Gamefront News: GameFront 2010: The Essential Civilization V Mods

To be frank, Civilization V is not – yet – perfect. The massive changes to the series’ conventions have been met with everything from outrage to acclaim, but whatever your opinion of the final product (and I like it a lot), it should probably still be considered a work in progress. There’s a long ways to go before we get to Beyond The Sword levels of awesome, and this is particularly true when it comes to gameplay changes such as the one-unit-tile rule, or the omission of beloved aspects of earlier games (whither religions! Or Corporations!). So while you’re waiting for the almost-certain-to-be-massive expansion packs that have come to define the experience of playing a Civilization game, we suggest you familiarize yourself with the many mods available to enhance, alter or drastically transform the game.

To help, here are GameFront’s staff picks for the most essential Civilization V mods of 2010.

1 - Ben Richardson - * A Civ of Ice and Fire
2 - Ross Lincoln - * The World of Tamriel
3 - Greek World Civ V
4 - Total Mod V.6
5 - Legions

Gamefront News: Mass Effect 3 Has Been Accidentally Announced (PLOT SYNOPSIS INSIDE)

A lot of times, retailers will f–k up up game announcements by posting listings for the games before they’re announced. That kind of thing happened today, but the perp this time is none other than the official EA Store, which today posted a listing for Mass Effect 3. It’s still there, in fact. This isn’t particularly exciting, since we expect a real announcement tomorrow and because of f–king course Mass Effect 3 is on the way. But this is still kinda exciting because the listing has a plot synopsis for the game, as you can see in that image. The text:

“Earth is burning. Striking from beyond known space, a race of terrifying machines have begun their destruction of the human race. As Commander Shepard, an Alliance Marine, your only hope for saving mankind is to rally the civilizations of the galaxy and launch one final mission to take back the Earth.”

Gamefront News: New Civ V DLC Will Add The Spanish Empire

Continuing the steady stream of new content for Civilzation V that already includes Babylon, the Mongols and a slew of scenarios, Firaxis issued a press release today announcing the next DLC pack, due December 16th, and giving everyone on the internet an excuse to reference Monty Python. For a mere $7.49, the new DLC adds the Spanish and Incan empires, and a new scenario that allows you really open up some old wounds but good.

From the press release:

Scenario Description

The year is 1492. To the courts of England, France, and Spain come intrepid explorers, anxious to voyage across the Atlantic in search of a western route to China and the Indies. Will they find a new trade route and uncover untold riches from the Asian shores? Or will they perhaps run aground on undiscovered lands along their way? Will native populations be receptive to the knowledge and trade prospects presented to them, or will they fight against the invaders of their homeland? What riches, fame, and opportunities await those who brave the unknown waters? What path will you choose? Who will prevail in the struggle for supremacy over this New World?

Gamefront News: Sony Has Planetside Sequel in the Works

Anyone here (besides me) remember Planetside? If you don’t, back in 2003 Sony Online Entertainment released it as their entry into the MMOFPS market. Planetside thrust you into the thick of huge battles that might include hundreds of players, and involve controlling territory.

In an interview with The Escapist, SOE President John Smedley let slip a little piece of news that Planetside fans should be very excited about. Said Smedley,

We have a very big launch coming in the month of March. It’s a big first person shooter franchise that we’re really happy with. We haven’t technically announced it. This is the farthest I’ve gone [discussing it with the press] and the PR people are going to shoot me. We don’t have the official name for it. Planetside Next is kind of the working title.

Gamefront News: VGA 2010: Batman: Arkham City Trailer

Can’t watch the Video Game Awards on Spike TV? Yeah, me neither — that’s why I’m writing this for you, to solve our common plight. Because below we have the Batman: Arkham City trailer that just played on the VGA live broadcast.

The trailer looks amazing, as is to be expected, with lots of SWAT guys apparently missing the lessons of the last million years; you can’t be the Batman. Hang it up.

You’re still reading? What’s wrong with you.

Gamefront News: VGA 2010: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Trailer

In the classic Bethesda tradition of getting awesome voice talent attached to a very small portion of their games (see also: Sean Bean, Patrick Stewart, Ron Perlman in just the last few years), this trailer for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim features everybody’s favorite exorcist, Max Von Sydow.

Hopefully he has a larger role than Patrick Stewart as we take to Skyrim. In fact, I hope he pulls a Sean Connery and voices that dragon, the one that seems to breathe eels or…space heart air, or whatever.

But if Dennis Quaid* shows up, I might have to bail on this whole Elder Scroll thing.

Gamefront News: VGA 2010: Mass Effect 3 Teaser

For something this short, a few pressing questions are definitively answered: Yes, we will finally get to see Earth; yes, the Reapers are invading, en masse; Yes, there are still British people in the 2180s; And yes, I did need to change my pants after seeing this.

“Holidays” 2011 need to hurry up and be now already.

Gamefront News: VGA 2010: Resistance 3 Trailer

“Lieutenant Dan, whataya doin’ here?”

“Well, I told you if you were ever a shrimp boat captain, I would come be your first mate.”

Hope you brought your shotgun, Lieutenant Dan, because apparently you’re taking the Jenny down the river into evil hybrid monster Chimera town in Resistance 3.

It appears a huge portion of the game takes place on this boat. I guess if you’re looking for new territory, going up the river with Forrest and Lieutenant Dan hasn’t really been done in a game before. Hopefully there’s a shrimp-cooking minigame. Let’s see: soup, stew, salad, sandwiches, barbequed, broiled, baked, sauteed…

Gamefront News: VGA 2010: SSX: Deadly Descents Trailer

This SSX: Deadly Descents trailer could have replaced that skiing scene from True Lies. It’s just as dramatic and intense, and you get the same sense that something really really important is happening, except there’s no one else there and protagonist has no reason to be on the mountain other than to just be awesome.

Still, the VGA trailer below makes me wonder what SSX: Deadly Descents might really be about. I hope you’re like a snowboarding secret agent, or a snowboarding international arms dealer, or a snowboarding Batman (see image above).

Gamefront News: VGA 2010: Thor: God of Thunder Trailer

Sure, it might look like it should be called God of Thor, or maybe Castlevania: Thors of Shadow. Darksiders II: God of Thunder. Um…SplatterThor.

Then again, smacking things with a hammer is usually a pretty compelling gameplay mechanic.

Either way, we’ve got the Thor: God of Thunder trailer from the Video Game Awards below, and it includes Thor fighting lots of big, mean-looking things, and possibly going to Hell or inside a volcano or something.

Gamefront News: VGA 2010: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception Trailer

Mark Wahlberg might be in the Uncharted movie adaptation and it might very well be f—ing awful based on all preliminary information — but at least we’ve got an awesome new Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception trailer to pine over.

Fresh out of the Spike Video Game Awards, the trailer suggests plane crashes < walking across open desert for Nathan Drake. Gotta love a dude who picks extremely likely flaming death over trudging through sand.

Just have a need to experience World of Warcraft vicariously, now that you’re off the wagon? Armada 2: Creu Chwedl Cancelled
Its been almost a year since the last news update so it might not be a surprise that Creu Chwedl is cancelled. My copy of Milkshape broke and I could not repair it I also had to start from scratch with my A2 directory. I no longer have the time nor the inclination to mod as I have two collage courses to do and I am hoping to soon become a catechumen of the Holy Orthodox Church. So since I had my updated/new P.C. I have not re-installed A2. I'm sorry to all who were looking forward to the mod.

Creu Chwedl website shall be up till February my old email is down and I have forgot my Filefront forum password so if any one need to contact me please send it to startrekATbritish-islesDOTorg replaceing At with @ and Dot with.

Empire at War: Halo: Campaign Commander - An Interview with The_Farseer
As those of us who visit ModDB may have seen, there's a new Halo mod kicking around; Halo: Campaign Commander, a mod being worked on by The_Farseer, the same man who created Rise of the Mandalorians. Today, we get a look at what Farseer plans to do with the mod as we asked him some questions in this interview.

1. The majority of EaW mods are based off of one part of Star Wars or another. What drove you to make a Halo mod, knowing that a large portion of the community has its roots in Star Wars mods?

I love Halo, first of all. I might even like it more than Star Wars. The main reason, however, was stated in the question; everyone makes Star Wars "era" mods...or the ever popular "clone wars" mod. I wanted to break away from that and create something that few others have attempted.

2. You’ve released a very successful mod, Rise of the Mandalorians, which I would recommend to any EaW player interested in a high quality mod. How has working on that mod shaped the way you approached working on Halo: Campaign Commander?

I learned a lot from Rise of the Mandalorians. Fans enjoyed it and it received more praise than I thought it would, in honesty. I'm using many of the same techniques to mod for HALO: Campaign Commander but there are things I've picked up post-release of RotM that will also be included. I've also learned though, by just observing the community, that most players get tired of a mod that only adds a few units and retains all the gameplay aspects of the vanilla engine. This has prompted me to look into adding some very unique and perhaps new gameplay mechanics. I won't disclose what they are yet and there are even a few that I don't know if they are possible with the ALO engine. I do know that the EaW community wants and needs something new. HALO: Campaign Commander will hopefully deliver on that with some new and possibly strategy-changing gameplay devices.

Flight Simulator X: Platinum Airways introduces Open Skies concept to virtual airlines
Platinum Airways (www.platinumairays.org) has become the first virtual airline to liberate and liberalise the airways by introducing Open Skies. In a radical breakaway from traditional virtual airlines, Platinum Airways is allowing its pilots to fly any mission of their choice in addition to operating its hub network.

From its launch in July 2010, Platinum Airways made it clear that it was a very virtual airline that was high in content and low on rules. Originally, it operated out of four hubs (Dallas-Ft Worth, Vancouver, Perth and Brussels). However, the majority of the fifty plus pilots who joined within the first few months indicated that they were in favour of expanding the schedule of more than 800 flights. Platinum Airways management responded by implementing a full Open Skies policy. In the same way as real world Open Skies negotiations succeeded in removing landing rights restrictions in many regions, Platinum Airways liberates the airways by allowing its pilots to fly any mission of their choice with the aircraft of their choice and at their preferred time. In addition, for those pilots who prefer fixed hubs, a poll was held to select a fifth hub. Platinum Airways’ pilots opted for Newark, which will soon be added to the existing hubs.

“As far as we could check, Platinum Airways is the first virtual airline to liberalise and liberate the airways and to introduce true Open Skies,” says Al Nel, Platinum Airways’ CEO. “Our decision clearly differentiates us from all other virtual airlines and should please newcomers and experienced flight simmers alike. The new Open Skies policy has already been translated into a web based PIREP application. Our Destination of the Week has also been adapted to the bold move, as our virtual pilots are free to select their departing airport to reach the destination. Platinum Airways has a strong fleet of aircraft in its own livery and we are keen to grow our airline by responding to valuable ideas by our members.”
