Gamefront News: 10 Best Kinect Hacks So Far (LIST)
The greatest thing about Kinect and its 8 million sales/ships/whatever isn’t that it plays cool games (though hopefully that’s going to change in the near future): it’s that hackers are going nuts with the device, showing off all the cool things it can do, and putting it on YouTube.
Whether it be giving robots the facilities to hunt and destroy all humans or pushing the limits of breast-based physics, people are making their Kinects do some pretty cool, non-petting-virtual-animals-type things. We’ve compiled a list of our favorites below.
Britain recently scrapped plans to provide tax relief for game developers, and Bobby Kotick is pissed. “I think it was a terrible mistake,” bro said (as reported by The Telegraph). “There are so many other places that are encouraging the video games industry.”
Activision Blizzard has a big-ass office with 600 people in Britain, and so moving out of there would not be a small enterprise. It’d be a huge enterprise, in fact, if they were to actually move away, and so this’ll be an interesting story to watch. Of course, the most interesting aspect of this story is not even about Activision, which wouldn’t be hugely affected by this anyway since they’re so freaking rich. More interesting would be how smaller developers react.
Here in the US companies do a lot of slightly odd things for tax breaks, like how every LLC has a home address in Delaware, for example. I wonder if they could do that in the UK, like keep the office in Britain while filing in like Scotland or something.
Turns out, Avatar Kinect is exactly what we all thought it would be: a virtual social networking service that’s coming in an Xbox Live update.
During its keynote address Wednesday at CES 2011 in Las Vegas, Microsoft showed a (kind of short) video about Avatar Kinect, showing exactly how it works. You sit in front of your TV and Kinect sensor, and the camera maps your movement and facial features — a new development — onto your avatar. Then your avatar can sit in a virtual room on your screen with other friends avatars, where you can have conversations.
There are multiple “sets” where you can sit with your friends, and Avatar Kinect will include (some kind of) Facebook compatibility as well — in the video, the actors were using Windows Phone 7 to access Facebook.
Civilization World — formerly known as Civilization: Network — isn’t launching for real for real for a while, but Sid and Co. are launching a closed Alpha next week. The game is basically Civilization as we know it but you play with and/or against your friends, and games do eventually end.
Now, if you wanna get into the closed alpha, you have to have a team of bros and broettes with with you can play; no singles allowed. You can have anywhere from five to 50 folks on a single teams. That’s for the alpha only; obviously you won’t need a group to play once it actually launches later this year. You should try to sign up soon; they start picking folks on Monday.
For a longer version of what I just said straight from the keyboard of Sid Meier, go here. To skip all that and just sign up, go here. Have fun, children.
EA has announced that it will have a DLC pack available for Dragon Age 2 when the game hits stores on March 8.
Titled “The Exiled Prince,” the DLC will be free to purchasers of the Signature Edition of the game. Those plebeians who purchase the Standard Edition will need to fork out an additional $7.00 (560 MS Points) to grab a copy of the content.
Don’t forget that if you pre-order Dragon Age 2 before January 11th, you get a free upgrade to the Signature Edition. More details about the upgrade, and what’s in the Signature Edition can be found on the official Dragon Age 2 website.
We’ve got the trailer for this DLC below (download it here), but before you watch it, I want to add something here.
Team6 has released a new trailer for FlatOut Wii. This trailer features about thirty seconds of the Car Basher game mode. You can download this video here or watch it below.
FlatOut is the highly anticipated next chapter of the popular FlatOut franchise, developed by Team6 game studios exclusively for the Wii system. With brand new physics, unequalled graphics, a new violent-driving reward system, new racing locations, new stunt arena themes, new battle arena, a complete new ‘car basher’ stuntmode and 16 over-the-top crazy vehicles to be demolished, FlatOut Wii takes racing to a whole new level of aggressive driving on the Wii. For the first time in FlatOut history, all gamemodes are available in ‘cooperation’ mode now!
- Stunning environments and realistic graphics: FlatOut Wii features some of the best graphics seen in a racegame for the Nintendo Wii.
- Authentic physics technology and design.
- Four spectacular gamemodes available in both single- and multiplayer.
- 16 Cars to be wrecked.
- Loads of violence and even more fun!
Telltale Games’ Twitter account confirmed that readers of the February issue of Game Informer will get a look at its upcoming Jurassic Park title, complete with screenshots and some exclusive information about the game.
Meantime, we won’t know what the game looks like until the magazine hit newsstands. Maybe it’ll be a little like the image above. But probably not.
Telltale just recently put out the first episode of its Back to the Future licensed game, which has a somewhat cartoonish art style that actually matches up quite nicely with the atmosphere of the story (see below). I wouldn’t be surprised to see Telltale take some liberties with the look of Jurassic Park as well, although since it’s decidedly darker, the direction will likely be decidedly darker than what we’re seeing in that game.
Titan Quest is not as beloved as Torchlight or the Diablo series, but it’s a pretty good Action RPG by most measures. While the studio that made the game is no longer in existence, there is a pretty active mod community behind the game that includes the folks behind thee Underlord Total Conversion Mod.
Many Titan Quest mods add new monsters or weapons but Underlord is a major overhaul of the game including lots of new skills, completely new class advancements, new monsters, items and even new locations. Titan Quest players who found the original game mythology-based game unbalanced or limited will find that Underlord isn’t just a bunch of new content, it actually restores some content developed originally and offers a re-balance to factor in new skills, settings and items.
Titan Quest is a bit different from Torchlight or Diablo however in that it is a fixed progression title, not a randomized game so another advantage to the Underlord mod is the expansion and addition of so many new quests and an opportunity to revisit this fun older game with fresh eyes.
Looking for a spin on the traditional MMO formula? FunCom, the Norwegian developer behind Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures is working on a game titled The Secret World. EA Partners and FunCom recently announced that they would be, pardon the repetition, partnering up to bring the game to market upon release.
The Secret World is a modern game that includes secret organizations and conspiracies and reportedly includes factions like the Knights Templar, the Illuminati and will feature London, New York and Seoul in its setting and had a distinctly Hunter the Reckoning / World of Darkness feel to it.
There is little information about the gameplay or larger metaplot available at this point but the Dark Days are Coming teaser site is interesting enough to keep me intrigued. Modern MMO’s don’t exactly have a great track record – The Matrix Online, APB, etc. Could this be the one to take off?
When the new GameInformer cover was revealed, it put Elder Scrolls fans into a state. There was text in some strange runic language on the back cover, but what did it say?
You can see the text in the image above. Those cunning linguists over at Reddithave done all of the necessary research and translation for us.
Here’s the original text:
DOVAHKIIN DOVAHKIIN / NAAL OK ZIN LOS VAHRIIN / WAH DEIN VOKUL MAHFAERAAK AHST VAAL / AHRK FIN NOROK PAAL GRAAN / FOD NUST HON ZINDRO ZAAN / DOVAHKIIN FAH HIN KOGAAN MU DRAAL / AHRK FIN KEL LOST PRODAH / DO VED VIING KO FIN KRAH / TOL FOD ZEYMAH WIN KEIN MEYZ FUNDEIN / ALDUIN FEYN DO JUN / KRUZIIK VOKUN STAADNAU / VOTH AAN BAHLOK WAH DIIVON FIN LEIN
And the translation?

Major Nelson from Xbox Live just threw down a list of Deals of the Week and new content coming to Xbox Live for the rest of the month, and good news: the first few items are all zombie-related, culminating in Plants vs. Zombies getting knocked down to 800 points for the week of Jan. 17.

Boy, 2010 was a strange year. We had our Battlefields and our Call of Dutys, but there were also some wild cards thrown in there. Medal of Honor reappeared, Rockstar made a cowboy game, and Duke Nukem Forever got an actual release date.
In case you were gone over the holidays, we rounded the GameFront crew to get their best (and worst) moments of 2010 for a variety of topics.
Check out these articles, tell us where we’re right, tell us where we’re wrong, and let’s see what 2011 brings for gamers!

Kinect is a big freakin’ deal on the Xbox 360 (even if it does cause Red Rings of Death — maybe), with Microsoft having shipped something like 8 million of them across the globe. Those are some huge numbers, and the little gesture control device has programmers hacking away at it, doing some really amazing thing with the technology. So with all the attention paid to Kinect, the question is, when is Microsoft going to start supporting it on PCs?
The answer to that is, apparently, all in good time. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told the BBC in an interview that Microsoft is going to support a PC Kinect. In fact, he said the company would “support that in a formal way at the right time.
We found out this week that the company that makes the Kinect, PrimeSense, is making a gesture controller for multimedia on PCs, and gesture gaming controls are in development or already finished from third-party peripheral makers. So if Microsoft’s “right time” isn’t “right now,” it ought to be.
Things that are amazing: LG’s new Optimus 2X, which the company says will be so f—ing powerful, it’ll allow players using the handset to engage in games against people playing on consoles and PCs over a WiFi connection.
Yes, I’m getting my wish for 2011, and it’s not even the end of January. Thanks be to Donovan, God of Gaming my friends made up when we were 12.
A report over at Ripten shows a demo from CES 2011 in Las Vegas that has players on the same game using three different devices: the Android-running Optimus, a Playstation 3 and a PC. They’re all playing Dungeon Defenders from indie developer Trendy Entertainment — which appears on all three platforms, plus Apple’s iDevices.
We don’t have a date or price on the Optimus 2X, although it sounds like it should be getting a release in the next month or so.
Ripten also had the specs for the uberphone:
* 4-inch WVGA screen
* 8GB memory (up to 32GB via microSD)
* 1,500 mAh battery
* 8 megapixel rear camera and 1.3 megapixel front camera
* True HDMI mirroring
* 1080p MPEG-4/H.264 playback and recording
There’s nothing much you can say about a Flash game called Panda Rampage except that it is called Panda Rampage, and that just might be the greatest name for a game ever conceived. The concept is simple: take control of a hungry Panda with a taste for human flesh and a voracious appetite in need of constant attention. Unleash him in (what they’re calling) Hyde Park. Eat everything you can. Avoid stuff that might kill you. Kill all humans you see. Oh, and you can also relieve your Panda’s bodily waste. Because nothing gets across the true, fearsome terror of the wild Panda like reminding people that even cute, cuddly animals have to poo.
It’s really, really easy and insanely fun. I just spent 45 minutes playing Panda Rampage before I realized I had just spent 45 minutes playing Panda Rampage. Check out the trailer and see for yourself:
There have been rumors making the round of the internet for a while that a Tomb Raider trilogy (like the God of War Collection) would be appearing this year. These rumors seemed to be confirmed by retailer listings that appeared in December, and they’ve now been officially confirmed by Square Enix.
The trilogy, which will be exclusive to the PS3, will contain Tomb Raider Legend and Tomb Raider Anniversary remastered in HD, as well as Tomb Raider Underworld. The disc-based trilogy will also include the following extras:
* Tomb Raider Trilogy PS3 theme pack
* Official Lara Croft female Home avatar outfit
* Viking Thrall male Home avatar outfit
* A collection of “Making of” game trailers
In the press release announcing the upcoming release, Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher said,
We’re really excited to be able to offer gamers the chance to play both Legend and Anniversary remastered in high definition on the PlayStation 3. These are two titles we are extremely proud to have created.
If you’re a PC gamer, you’ve heard of Razer. If you haven’t, please drop your PC gamer credentials in the trash right over there. If you’re not a PC gamer, just know that Razer is one of the top manufacturers of PC peripherals for gaming. It looks like Razer is about to expand their focus to include gaming machines as well. Well, at least one very specific type of gaming machine.
They’ve just announced the Switchblade. It’s just a concept right now, but what a concept. It’s like a gaming netbook, only better. It features a 7″ multi-touch screen, an Intel Atom processor, and one of the most interesting keyboards I have ever seen.
Apparently, the keyboard (let me quote this from Razer), “intelligently recognizes the game’s specific interface and transposes the interactive visual elements such as command icons and control schemes right to the mechanical keys.” Trust me when I say that it doesn’t sound nearly as awesome as it looks. This isn’t just a macro or two. This is actual in-game UI being transferred onto keys, complete with in-game art for the buttons.
You can see more info on it at Razer’s Switchblade page. Also, you can see it in video below. Try not to let your jaw hit the floor too hard, ok?
Rockstar has been busy, and a big new title update rolling out for Red Dead Redemption is the proof. Tons of bugs have been identified, targeted and annihilated in the new update, which spans the core game and just about all of the add-on content on the market.
Two big changes in the update: the game no longer automatically reboots when you switch from single player to multiplayer, and Japanese players are now able to play with players from other countries online.
Check out the details below.
Red Dead Redemption:
* The game no longer reboots when switching from MP to SP, or from regular SP to MP. Going to the main menu from any mode or leaving Undead Nightmare single player mode will still reboot (except Japan).
* Lasso will now retract properly when thrown while riding fast on a horse.
* Removed display message saying “This horse is now your trusty steed” when you hitch a horse that you already own.
Well, this is certainly interesting. A Chinese website called IT186 got a hold of some version of the Playstation Phone by some means, and they published a very lengthy, 12-page preview of the thing with tons of pictures and a few videos, which I have embedded below. This is pretty amusing timing, what with this coming up now during CES a day after Sony failed to make this official.
And they’ve got games running on it, which is cool. The tech specs they provide look pretty much like what we thought they would be, with a couple differences — it has Android 2.3 instead of 3.0 and 512MB ROM instead of 1gb. It does have Xperia branding, which means that it probably will get a name other than “Playstation Phone” when i is eventually announced.
Anyway, watch the videos below and then head over to IT186 for the full scoop. You may not be able to read it, but they’ve got a ton of pictures you can enjoy. I thought about stealing all their photos and posting them here
Even though we all know about it, we’ve seen it about 50 times, and CES 2011 in Las Vegas would have been a great opportunity to announce it, Sony has failed to open the bag and let its Playstation Phone cat come out and play.
Instead, Sony Ericcson announced the Xperia Arc, a new Android 2.3 Gingerbread phone that is, you know, a whole lot like other smartphones. It has some cool features, like an HDMI TV out port, but it doesn’t have a slide-down controller. So who cares.
The Xperia Arc is set to ship in First Quarter 2011 (which is when the Playstation Phone was rumored to ship). We saw supposed shots of the Xperia Play, the believed name for the Playstation Phone, yesterday on Engadget, but despite rolling out a whole lot of products at CES, we still haven’t heard anything official from Sony about it. Boo.
Right behind the recent news that PS3′s root key has been obtained, Sony’s hacker-related headaches continue apace. Today, hacker kakaroto announced on his blog that he has created the world’s first custom firmware for the previously uncrackable console:
“People are asking what are the features of this firmware, it’s simple, all it does is to add those “Install Package Files” options to the Game section of the XMB. It doesn’t do anything else!
This firmware will not allow you to run the currently available homebrew application. Once the homebrew developers re-package their files in a ‘retail’ .pkg format with signed executable, then it will work (this should be coming soon thanks to the work of the fail0verflow team).
Since the kernel is left unmodified, this means that this custom firmware is really meant for future homebrew installation, and it will not allow piracy. I plan on keeping it that way.

Now that we know that The Masters is finally going to be represented in a video game, we need to know how well the course will be translated, right?
Well, EA has rolled out two new trailers to give an idea of just how well they’ve done. The first gives you a look at the Augusta National course, and the second shows off the TPC San Antonio course.
So it’s the weekend we were all hoping to have a couple days off after the nonsense of CES 2011 in Las Vegas this week, but noooo, Nintendo had to go have a show and basically talk about everything 3DS we’ve been waiting to hear. Thanks, guys. I was supposed to go hiking today. Anyway, we’re seeing a bunch of videos from GoNintendo from the show, all of which are in Japanese, but many of which are showing some of the cool things you can do with the 3DS. We saw some of these features earlier in the week, like making a Mii with the 3DS camera and some blurry stuff about augmented reality, but these demos are, obviously, a lot more clear.
There’s also footage from Kid Icarus: Uprising and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D in there. Eat up, kiddies.
Remember when we told you about World of Warcraft: Cataclysm becoming the best-selling PC game of all time.
Since then, sales have slowed down a bit, but Blizzard has still managed to up that total to 4.7 million sales. In the announcement of the sales figures, Blizzard boss Mike Morhaime said,
We created thousands of new quests, introduced new lands to explore, and extensively revamped the game world for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm, making it our biggest and most ambitious expansion yet. We’ve been floored by the community’s response so far, and we’d like to thank them for their continued passion and support for World of Warcraft, and for helping Cataclysm reach this incredible milestone.
I don’t think anyone is surprised by these sales figures. More likely, we’re just trying to get that job at Blizzard counting all the money!
Battle for Middle Earth: BFME Servers Down - GameRanger Time!
Dear BFME players,
The servers have been shutdown by EA, we all got an extra day to play as they weren't going to shut the servers down on a public holiday, which was to an extent quite nice. However, here comes the split decision for all BFME players; you'll carry on playing but how? You can use hamachi but its limited currently; you could stop playing altogether and just reminisce. If you decide to carry on playing then download GameRanger, its like Hamachi or even GArena if you've tried that, but it has a lot more people online playing games and is just as if not easier to use.
GameRanger was one of the first tools to be mentioned when the server announcement shutdown arose and by the looks of things all BFME community sites are really pushing for the majority of BFME players who want to carry on playing to use this, in order to keep the community together. I will be liaising with various leaders of sites to make sure this is the case as I'm sure other community leaders will be wanting to do the same to make sure this community stays in tact and isn't disturbed by the server shutdown.
You can download GameRanger here as well as see its instructions for how to install and use with the game of your choice. I will be making a tutorial with screenshots for members to look at in case they get a bit stuck, but as for now, GameRanger is the only way in which this community can truly stick together and is by far the easiest.
I noticed Mr Kevill posted on the last news post about the server shutdown, he is the creator of GameRanger and I would like to welcome him to the site, and let him know that LotRFiles as well as other sites will be hoping that GameRanger can support all of the BFME community! All jokes aside I'm sure it will, I'd like to thank him for creating this as it's saved other games in the past and also those who happen to have other problems that stop them from playing online.
Quote:Because of the servers being taken down for lotr many people probably will never play it again due to the fact that online play was the main feature. I have uploaded 2 videos on youtube which are the epilogue beginning and ending for everyone to enjoy in-case gamers never got to see the amazing ending to this game.
We will continue the tradition of our Sunday Night Games and therefore from now on they will take place every week till the upcoming release of the version 3.1. For the people that have not read the news in the past for the upcoming version 3.1, we have made two video's with all the news! You can also find the news at http://www.inside1918.net/include.php?path=start.php]Inside1918!
But now we focus on the current version 3.0! Through this trailer, we present the current modification. Battlefield 1918 can be downloaded from Filefront by clicking here. Its free and it is one of the largest World War One mods! And we promise you that version 3.1 will be the biggest update that Battlefield 1918 will get!
Make sure you have Battlefield 1942 (v1.61), its a cheap game, and download Battlefield 1918. Make sure you have instal the mod in the good directory, because a lot people instal the mod in the wrong Program Files map. The installation instal the mod automatical in the map Programme, while most people use Program Files. We have fix this bug and the Client files of the coming V3.1 will not have this bug anymore.
