Oblivion Patch Causing Issues
The frame rate's better, but at the cost of what?
There was much rejoicing when Bethesda Softworks released the long awaited version 1.1 patch for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion this week. Fans have both bitched and enjoyed the studio's additional downloadable content, but there were plenty of issues still in need of addressing in the original game.
Unfortunately, the patch hasn't resulted in universally happy gamers on the Xbox 360 side, and even we're experiencing problems. Everyone's happy the outdoor frame rate's increased, but apparently at the cost of exponentially increased loading times, regardless of the company having removed much of the overused 'Now Loading' screen.
"Far, far less hitching than before and the framerate is smoother on the eye. Still a bit sketchy towards busier areas, but no-where near as bad as it was before, particularly at Oblivion gates or when they are in the distance. The dreaded "loading" message appears far, far less," said squarejawhero on the official message boards.
Another issue appears to be random lock-ups. Not frame rate hiccups, but actual game-breaking freezes. Reports from users, however, are scattered, mixed and full of confusion over whether the issues are being caused by the patch or sheer randomness.
Some workaround solutions have already started appearing, however. Clearing your Xbox 360's hard drive cache reportedly fixes the loading issue, but if you aren't scouring the message boards, how are you supposed to put two and two together?
Even though the patch cleans up a number of glitches quests, many are still upset because it doesn't solve their existing issues. If you've already run into and experienced a glitch quest, there's a good chance the patch will do nothing to fix it; the patch can't fix contaminated saves. Consequently, Bethesda employees have been recommending fans start new characters if they want to experience these quests.
"I'm waiting for a response from tech support about this issue. If their answer is to start over with a new character, then Bethesda has lost a customer," said scott08107 on the boards.
PorkTree followed up with a similar sentiment. "...the craptastic job bethsoft has done on is stunning. And after 125 hours of play the answer is, "o, sorry, start a new character and it will be ok" - screw that," he said.
None of these side effects were mentioned in the patch notes, however, and aren't patches supposed to solve problems, not create series of new ones? Bethesda hasn't responded to a request for comment on yet, but hopefully we'll have more later today.

Well at least they haven't been doing as bad as DICE has. If you guys go over to the BF2 site, you'll see some people who honestly want to kill EA/DICE for being on patch 1.3 AND CAUSING MORE PROBLEMS THAN IN FIXED!!!
So we could have it worse. Give them some time and i'm sure they will fix it. Besides, I didn't buy this game for the main quest, just for the stuff the community comes out with. It can be pretty intresting.

It is a big game. There are still glitches in Morrowind. I'm happy to see they are doing something atleast. I'm sure Bethesda will work on reversing the new serious problems.

I have a new glitch to add, Skybox is broke on the game because i was walking in anvil and i fell right through the ground Im glad i told this as it happens many times , oh and also in loading times it crashes to desktop

the patch was suposed to fix the crashing after leaving a building problem but i get twice as mutch as i used to (crashing around 2-3 times every 40-60 minutes now) and it's damn irritating getting it back to the desktop because it takes around 5 minutes to quit itself or minimize. and my pc isnt low spec either.

After the patch, the Temple District in the Imperial City now literally floats about 6' off the ground. You have to JUMP to get into the doors! I've also been experiencing random lock-ups and game crashes, though my friend's blamed it on me for having a Dell.
The quest for the Dragon Armor has also FUBARed. Ever since I patched, -AFTER having completed the main quests-, the promised Dragon Armor has never been readied. 2 1/2 weeks passed, and it was thought that it was 'cause we'd toggled AI off for a few in-game days but apparently not. ;_;
I haven't bothered to get the Vampire Cure since being a Vampire has some of the greatest benefits the game has to offer, especially if you have the two expansion plugins I use.; ((Vampire Alchemy and Blood Vials.))

Some of those issues are not just on the 360, even since the patch I have been getting longer load times and random lock-ups while loading.

Bethesda is turning into EA in the sense of dodgy patches that fix and create bugs. Look at Battlefield 2, each patch fixes tonnes of bugs, but brings in a whole heap of them.

All you people going on about Bethesda being crap need to look at EA (and Battlefield 2), and the people who say that the EA patches fixed loads of bug but created new ones, need to look again.
Here's a little comparison for you:
Bethesda create Oblivion, they test it and it's only got a few glitches.
If all users were honest then you could discount a lot of them as "inadequate system specs" because, let's face it, this is a hefty game.
They release one 'beta' patch (and tell us it's beta) and then a 1.1 patch, which fixes a lot of customer complaints. They niether remove, nor add content that is not asked for.
EA create Battlefield 2, supposedly listening to the fans of the game they had to wrok from (Battlefield 1942). They change the entire aiming system, they dumb down most of the game, and they release a demo full of bugs.
Over a year later, several patches have been released and there are still the bugs that were in the demo.
They hav had to withdraw a patch, patch a patch and inevitably give up on one of the patches as a total failure.
They have also changed the game-play completely away from what made the series so good in the first place (and made the demo enjoyable). They have also dumbed down the game so much that fans of the Battlefield series that put time and effort into learnign the games, are mostly eagerly awaiting any other game than another Battlefield.
EA have also added lots of content that was not asked for, removed content that players actually liked. In short, they listened to the players who bought the gae, played 5 minutes, then were on the forums whining about what they don't like - as opposed to the players who stuck with the BF series and knew what it need to be better.
So, to sum up: think yourself lucky to have a developer/publisher that not only listens to the fans ideas, but implements them as best they can as well. They also seem to pay attention to the fans of the game, rather than the idiots who bought it yesterday and want it nerfed because 'it's too complicated and difficult on the easiest setting..'
Hooray for Bethesda!
PS On a side-note, I haven't installed the patch because I've not experienced any major problems others than loading times - which is now sorted after shutting down all non-essential programs in the background and making sure I actually have a systems that can handle the game.
