Oblivion now rated M - Official
Posted by: mercz on 05-03-2006 @ 17:18 - Source: Gamespot
This News Item has been viewed 6,582 times
Oblivion's rating has been changed from the orignal rating of "T" to a new rating of "M". This is due to the presence of a topless texture that could be accessed and re-applied to the female's upper body texture, as well as the possibility of editing the .ini file to include more blood and a longer blood staining duration. You can read it here.

Uhg, this is the same thing that happened with GTA. User modding... you know I could probably make Katamari a mature game if I was able to edit the game through the memory card.

ESRB should not be going for user mods, only the content in the game itself upon release. Every teen game on file front could probably be bumped up to mature if we tried.

I think its because the texture was already there, on the disk

The texture could not be accessed normally though, just like on GTA, some sort of modding was required for it to be applied. It was not ment to actually be used in the game upon release.

The Xbox 360 version can't be user modded and it got rerated. And the Rated M boxes haven't been distrubuted yet. Plus, Beth can all fix this by making a patch that blocks this out.

this is a mod that blocked the Hot Coffee mod in GTA: SA. Bethedsa is way better than Rockstar and should be able to make a patch like that.

I found someone whom made the mesh accessable, and they said, and I quote,

"In the process of trying to create a nude skin for Oblivion, I found Bethesda had already done all the work for me. They just covered it up with underwear afterwards." (Directly from Oblivion Source, http://www.oblivionsource.com/?page=modforge&op=viewproject&project_id=191)

This is exactly what happened with San Andreas. Now, I'm not normally one to place blame, but here it goes; It's Bethesda's fault. They put the mesh there. They should've thought ahead of time and figured that somone would eventually access it. I agree with the modder's opinion about "government/society/whatever."

And, unfortunatley, "odd" people have already gotten a hold of it. To see what I mean, check the twelfth comment from the bottom... it involves a carrot. Need I say more?

This is completely unnecessary. This mod is OPTIONAL, it's not even SUPPOSED to be seen. However, you could ask why Bethesda put the mesh there in the first place, if there is supposed to be underwear over it. This arguement is going to cause a huge fracas, then die down in a month or two, yet be forever referred to in conversation.

What is the industry coming to?

I got a couple points why changing it to mature is nonsence:

1. The official Oblivion Art Designers didn't made that nudity mod, but a group of low-life gamers that wants to "hot"-up their game.

2. Normal people won't even download it, unless you are kind of a weird guy that can't see a girl in real life...well i can tell them this, it's not biology class! Roll Eyes (sarcastic)

3. Same for the blood as 1., maybe you can set it easily higher, but a normal guy would still see that the blood is fake and ugly....

4. Maybe some guys know the upcoming mod: Merciless Blood Mod for call of duty 2? In any way, there are no reports yet that cod2 haves to be changed from teen to mature now because by that mod there comes many blood, so they dont even watch all games which is unfair for Bethesda.

5. Rating it higher WON'T prevent that people buy it, because people would even buy it quicker, and seller's never resist to sell it to younger people.
(Except when its about beer and cigarretes, only then seller's will resist to sell it to younger people.)

6. IF it would prevent more sales then before, then Bethesda have the right to make a process to the teen-mature staff because they are loosing sales, which won't hapen but just imagine that it can happen.

Bethesda just keeps getting more stupid by the day.... First they make a game that is tottaly differnt from the great experience from morrowind. and made it something more pretty and gave up certain elements, such as less weapons less armors, spells removed.the leveling system, skills taken out such as spear, axe, short blades, long blades, the stupid transportaion system. among other things, and now this? bethesda, you are slowly loosing your noble fans, because of your stupidty... Aaargh!!! besthesda... You Offically are starting to suck ass.

whats so stupid? underwear is an item of clothing, there is flesh underneath it. if you want to make it look as realistic as possible then u model whats underneath.

if u cant see topless people without editing the game then it doesnt have topless people in it does it?

thats like photoshoping a pair of boobies onto "the little mermaid" and then contacting the authories to make it an 18-over.

Bloomin rediculous, ESRB.. go find something worthy of your time.

#12 Are you an Elder Scrolls player? You sound like a big noob, they say it every day to people:
The Elder Scrolls Games have nothing to do with eachother, they are each about Tamriel BUT on a complete different way, the only things what are the same is thats it in Tamriel and the developer is the same.

Also, they made the game more Humanly, on a fairy-tale based way.
Thats why they deleted the odd armor and races, because then it would be different elder scrolls game, and because it just is better for the gameplay.

They took out skills and weapon classes because the game would then have to many things, though the only thing what i agree with you is that they could leave THAT in the game.

Dude... why do they make it a rated M game? Just because there's MODS to make it a rated M game, MODS aren't part of the game, someone else made it...mad

It's not like Bethseda made it, so why make it rated M?Aaargh!!!

*continues hunting for the person who made it a rated M game*

What's the big deal if you already have the game? Sure it sucks, but you already have it, so no worries. It's the people under 17 who haven't bought it yet that are getting screwed.

For good grief, you can easily download user-made nude skins for HL2, yet the rating doesn't change to AO despite graphic detail in the user made skins. It's nonsensical, you can keep a T rating no matter what mods contain as long as the developers didn't create the adult content and leave it hidden. How long before game ratings are changed based soley on what mods are available, and then how long before you can no longer mod? Modding is the main attraction for PC games over their console counterparts for me. Grr...

#19 every game should be, it's not hard for hackers or decoders or how you want to call them to hack a game CD and remove or add a detail on a body.
If i was Bethedsa, then i wouldn't let the guys that rated it M walk around for free, i would definatly do something about that.

Lol let's make an action versus the guy that rated it M!

... all seem to be missing the point...

HL2 had nude modds, so did many other games. BUT the nude content was made by the mod-makers, not the game developer.

On the other hand, Bethesda MADE the 'M-rated' content and then covered it up. BUT, they left it in the game, where it could be accessed by a hacker/mod-maker/whatever. SO, according to ESRB rules, the game must be rated M.

What Bethesda should have done was to remove that content completely, before release. But they just covered it up and hoped they'd get away with it. With is stupid, considering they were going to give us the mod-tool (Construction Set) which would allow the game to be ripped apart and that content stmubled upon (or actively searched for).

So, everyone stop your moaing and whing, it's not going to change anything. If you want to complain you may as well go to the Elder Scrolls site and do it there, since this is entirely Bethesda's fault.
Moaning at ESRB for following the rules is not going to accomplish anything, neither will posting on here with a rant about how the game you already have has been re-rated which won't affect you in the slightest.

Before anyone points to my crap typing or spelling, my 'n' key is a bit problematic and I really can't be*****d going through and checking it all thoroughly for the odd typo or spelling error that doesn't stop you figuring out what I'm on about.

Sod it, I'm just in from work, I'm going to enjoy a game of Oblivion before someone tells me I have stop playing in case I let my nephew see the screen. Which is especially ironic considering that he bought 'The Punisher' from a shop and he's only 8... Roll Eyes (sarcastic)

mikeyp, I agree with your point and you're right, the only reason the rating was changed was because bethesda left the content in the game, aka, hot coffee syndrome. My fear is that all the media attention the hot coffee mod and now this will bring to games will have soccer moms demanding that modding is halted or that game's ratings be based on more than just the in-the-box content.

It required modding the game though.

It was NEVER accessable without modding in the game. It never appears. This nude thing isn't actually part of the game, it is just a stupid texture that is impossible to be seen without directly modifying the game.

Since you can not access it with a mod, the ESRB should not be changing this. It really is like drawing the little mermaid nude then painting over it with a bikini and tail. Thats the example #13 gave.

It is never ment to be seen. It was never accessable without changing the game.

But you guys are also forgetting about the Blood thing. In most programming you NEED a variable for almost random things like that. The ESRB again rates up the game just because some kid modifies the blood occurance. That is the exact same thing that is done with the nude thing. It was NOT intended to be changed or modified and a high value was NOT in the game without user tinkering.

The ESRB needs to apply, thier online experiance may change during gameplay, to more than just connectivity and multiplayer, they need to advise it to the MODS that are out.

They DID show the dirtyest and most violent content that was in the game. The nudity was NOT in the game until a user modified the files and took off the top. The Blood was NOT extreme until a user modified the variables and increased the occurance of blood.

DO ANY OF YOU PEOPLE EVEN CARE? What point are you trying to get across? "Because of nudity" the game is evil? Why do people think that nudity is wrong? What does everyone have agents sex? Why do people have more problems with nudity then they do with drug use and violence? Now think about it what is worse- seeing some boob or murdering some1 in cold blood? I tell you one thing; not too many people go to jail for looking at tits but if you kill somebody, you are going to jail or getting the chair. And if you get caught with drugs you will get arrested. Every1 needs to get their priorities straight because this is becoming a world of morons, and al of you people are jest "fuel to the fire."
